What Free Men Can Do: The Winter War, the Use of Delay (2017) [pdf]
- lwswl 5y agoInteresting, but the U.S., as per usual, is not on the defense, but on the offense, just like in WWII. For the nation states and other sovereign forms affected by the any current Russian Aggression, there are also some clearly lacking similarities, namely that the U.S. and the rest of the West are not allying themselves with Russia against Germany, which could be said to be Finland's chief issue in securing aid. A good point however is that the West can rarely be relied on to truly help its poorer allies, except maybe by saying a few words.
- simonblack 5y agoThe Winter War was a romantic failure. We always hear of the one-sidedness of the start of the Winter War when the Finns destroyed a much larger Soviet invasion. We don't always hear about the end of the Winter War when the Finns were forced to surrender and lost a lot of territory and resources. Because of the Winter War the Germans thought that the Soviets would be a pushover. Hence Hitler's boast "You only have to kick in the door and the whole rotten structure will come crashing down." in mid-1941. Unfortunately for the Germans, the Soviets repeated the history of the Napoleonic War and marched into Berlin in 1945, just as they had previously marched into Paris in 1814.
