Still needs (proprietary?) firmware.
- pabs3 5y agoUnfortunately even Intel GPUs (and CPUs) need proprietary firmware these days.
- marcodiego 5y agoYes, but panfrost supported hardware doesn't.
- pabs3 5y agoI'd be surprised if Mali hardware didn't have some sort of inbuilt proprietary firmware. Even USB-C chargers seem to have that: https://forrestheller.com/Apollo-11-Computer-vs-USB-C-chargers.html https://forrestheller.com/Apollo-11-Computer-vs-USB-C-charge...
- marcodiego 5y agoIf the firmware lives only on the hardware, it is indistinguishable from hardware.
- pabs3 5y agoNot necessarily, it could be like CPU microcode, always present, the buggy version is the default, but you can update it to fix bugs, either on every boot or permanently in flash.
- marcodiego 5y agoI understand your point, but I don't want to re-start a "I agree with fsf stance here" discussion.
