I really don't believe self driving cars should be on the road at all. If it can't be perfect I do not want a computer without human intelligence controlling cars. I think a better investment would be on denser communities and pushing for more biking, walking, and public transportation.
- dont__panic 5y agoAh but your moneyed overlords would prefer that you buy $60,000 cars with inflated prices justified by the software and AI features and continue to live in a dystopian car-dominated landscape.
- ben_w 5y ago> If it can't be perfect I do not want a computer without human intelligence controlling cars. Not even if the AI is less imperfect than humans? In America last year, 46,000 died from road traffic incidents, almost all of which were humans not being perfect.
- f1yght 5y agoI mean it depends I guess. If it can make perfect judgement, never hit pedestrians or people riding bikes even if it's dark and rainy, then maybe. My bias is heavily toward living in the city so as far as that goes I would rather remove cars as much as possible than make them autonomous.
- ben_w 5y agoIf your argument is that AI is hard to get right an slow to develop, and they we can achieve an fast easy win by doing all the things that reduce car use, I absolutely agree. It just also sounds like you’re making the perfect the enemy of the good by holding AI to a higher standard than humans.
