Rally is the pinnacle of motorsports - tarmac, gravel, snow, forests, thin roads, hairpins, jumps, livestock, the full gamut of constantly changing conditions at high rates of speed. When a SCC can master that without some guidance system that turns it into a glorified slot car, I'll acknowledge that SCC tech is officially better than human drivers.
Until that point, a well-trained human managing the strategy of driving with the computer handling the tactics (execution of strategic intent) will always be the optimal combination.
- notahacker 5y agoFrankly I can live without the specialised maximising speed around gravelly bends stuff if they're reliable enough at dealing with real world edge cases of weird driving and jaywalking and stuff in the road to be able to do quarter of a billion miles without a fatality (yes, that's billion, and that's not much above the low bar of average British driver, which includes an awful lot of inebriated, incompetent and reckless driving) That's a lot more driving edge cases to eliminate than "works surprisingly well", but the problem isn't difficult driving, the problem is essentially bug free software and perfect exception handling. I'd rate the probability of software surpassing us at going really fast without worrying about g-forces or the possibility of the terrain flipping them quite a bit higher than that tbh.
