Reddit now blocks ALL domains under Russian ccTLD (.ru)
- Markoff 5y agoTheir official answer: > "We decided to do this due to the heavy cyber component to this war and the chance of manipulated content. Even seemingly innocuous links could be hosted by someone that is less benign. We certainly recognize that this is a pretty far reaching decision but there are generally other ways for most people to share the type of content that is being described. > As to why this wasn't communicated, there is a lot of things going on right now and sometimes moving fast means missing steps along the way (like sharing with mods). We did not intend to hide this decision."

- PaulHoule 5y agoNot sure I agree. Isn't there some resistance somewhere on a "ru" domain?
- rvz 5y agoOutstanding. /s Another private platform doing even completely ridiculous private platform actions. Just making a list of what all these 'platforms' CAN possibly do if you 'cross' their invisible line. Good luck trying to complain about this if you had nothing to do with these events and use a .ru TLD that is a domain hack to your own blog or whatnot. I predict that they will block .ru domains in external URL shorteners to prevent them from circumventing this. > We decided to do this due to the heavy cyber component to this war and the chance of manipulated content. This was the same old weak excuse made to de-platform the .ru TLD from the Ukrainian Government to ICANN. This does nothing to tackle the so-called 'misinformation'.
- Markoff 5y agothey are blocking shorteners for some time, but subreddit mods can decide to allow them, though they are discouraged from doing it
- witrak 5y agoYou can have any opinion about this action but the matter of fact is that ANYTHING done to make living in Russia more difficult helps to fight their imperial attitude.
