I once read this article that the Neanderthals were aware of the antibiotic properties of penicillin and used this to heal themselves. They knew some mosses (with penicillin fungi) had healing properties. They discovered this tens of thousands of years before Modern Man discovered it!! So this doesn't really surprise me at all.
