RFC: Remove support for Russian Elbrus processor
- anthk 5y agoEh, f*ck you. Free software it's for any purpose. The more tech alternatives we have, the better. Elbrus, RISC-V, Loongson... we need heterogeneous environments to avoid attacks.
- cyanydeez 5y agoDemocracy is akin to free software. Signalling this way is important because the underlying technical details are already available. Signalling is important. That's why certain licenses exist even if they're trivialy circumvented
- IndrekR 5y agoCan you actually get a computer with Elbrus processor outside of military use?
- listic 5y agoIt looks like you can, at least in Russia. Sber, Russia's biggest bank, recently evaluated some, and found them lacking https://www.tomshardware.com/news/russias-biggest-bank-tests-elbrus-cpu-finds-it-unacceptable https://www.tomshardware.com/news/russias-biggest-bank-tests...
- afiori 5y agofree software means free code not free development (both as in freedom). It would be free even if they intentionally and maliciously refactored the code just to make future backports harder. Honestly both stances are easily defensible here, but if Elbrus was a development drag this would be the perfect moment to reevaluate support.
- afiori 5y agoI have written this comment in a hurry and I don't like how it turned out, I am not sure how to fix it...
