Cost of new UK underground storage facility jumps to £53B
- GordonS 5y agoI thought that was the kind of money needed to build an actual nuclear power plant, not merely a "storage facility". Anyone in the industry know why it's so expensive? > The UK currently stores its 133,000 cubic metres of radioactive waste above ground, and the quantity is projected to swell to more than 4 million cubic metres in future Wow, I'd always imagined there was a tiny amount of radioactive waste - I really had no idea it was so much! I'd presume only a small amount was highly radioactive?
- logifail 5y ago> I'd always imagined there was a tiny amount of radioactive waste "Radioactive (or nuclear) waste is a byproduct from nuclear reactors, fuel processing plants, hospitals and research facilities. Radioactive waste is also generated while decommissioning and dismantling nuclear reactors and other nuclear facilities. There are two broad classifications: high-level or low-level waste. High-level waste is primarily spent fuel removed from reactors after producing electricity. Low-level waste comes from reactor operations and from medical, academic, industrial and other commercial uses of radioactive materials"[0] [0] https://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/fact-sheets/radwaste.html https://www.nrc.gov/reading-rm/doc-collections/fact-sheets/r...
