The claim I responded to is that "Afghanistan had a secular, left-leaning government in the 1970s - the US armed and funded the mujahideen, the radical Islamic jihadists, to overthrow that government." The link I provided says that "Carter signed two presidential findings in July 1979 permitting the CIA to spend $695,000 on non-military assistance (e.g., "cash, medical equipment, and radio transmitters") and on a propaganda campaign targeting the Soviet-backed leadership of the DRA". Note the non-military qualification. Keep reading and you will learn how the Soviet Union, not the insurgents, overthrew the government on December 27, 1979, to install one more to its liking, and how the US then (i.e. in the 1980s) started to give military aid to the insurgents, all contrary to gp's claim.
