Possibly also assuming that the Ukrainian army would falter like it did in 2014. Totally ignoring (or not even receiving) the intelligence reports about the buildup that happened since then. In any case, it's a surprising display of incompetence on so many levels. Possibly enough that in the end Putin's regime will fall without making Ukraine or the world a wasteland.
