- dang 5y agoPlease don't post unsubstantive comments or putdowns. It doesn't help. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- clouddrover 5y agoOf course it helps. It is proper and correct to treat pontificating nonsense as the pontificating nonsense it is.
- dang 5y agoIt's not what this site is for, and it destroys what it is for, so please don't post like that to HN. The element of personal attack (bringing in someone's name in in that aggressive manner) is particularly unwelcome. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html
- clouddrover 5y agoHe brought his own name into it. It's Luke Smith's Webpage. He says so himself. There is no mystery here. Who should I be talking to if not him?
- dang 5y agoIf you explicitly copy someone's name into a thread like this—especially their full name, which is never used in normal conversation—you're invoking a trope of confrontation that goes way beyond simply "talking to someone". Between that and the snark, the comment was clearly hostile and broke the site guidelines. Please don't do any more of that on HN. https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html There's a more general point too. Copying someone's personal details and bringing them into a thread, to use them as ammunition in an argument (which is what you did there—invoking the full name was an intensification and escalation), that's a form of personal attack which we ask people not to do on HN. Sure, the details may all be public, for example on the person's own website—that doesn't make it ok, though, because the very copying of it from one context to another is crossing a noticeable line. None of us would enjoy it if personal details about us were put into an internet comment by someone hostile, even if each detail happened to be public somewhere. https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&sort=byDate&type=comment&query=%22personal%20details%22%20by:dang https://hn.algolia.com/?dateRange=all&page=0&prefix=false&so...
- clouddrover 5y ago> especially their full name, which is never used in normal conversation Well that's clearly nonsense. Of course full names are used in normal conversation. If only we could get rid of all the opinions we didn't like things would be more decent!
