Rep. bill would allow US citizens to seize yachts, planes of Russian oligarchs
- m348e912 5y agoRoman Abramovich, Russian billionaire and former owner of Chelsea football club, has handed over stewardship to the "charitable foundation of Chelsea". So does that mean he is immune to having his stake in the club seized?
- dragonwriter 5y agoHe’d be immune to having it seized under the proposed US law because the UK is not subject to US law.
- Bostonian 5y agoWhat Putin is doing is a war crime, but being a rich Russian "oligarch" is not, and I am wary of our seizing private property because we are angry at Putin.
- muzika 5y agoThis. It’s unethical to take away property from Russian people just because of what Putin did.
- throwaway290 5y agoDon’t forget that this is the highest net worth individuals we are talking about. Due to how the country works, it is unbelievable they could create such wealth without involving the government in some way or another, and they may hold influence in relevant circles (no idea). Meanwhile, the seizures would do nothing drastic to their quality of life. If I was an American, though, I imagine I would feel queasy about the precedent. From outside, the culture strongly respects self-made fortunes.
