What does "MIXING" mean in this context?
- dane-pgp 5y agoI believe they were referring to the concept of a "mix network"[0], in particular the features of anonymous remailers[1]. In fact, we don't need to rewrite the email protocols to add E2E encryption, as Delta Chat has shown; and if backwards compatibility isn't a goal, then everyone could just move over to Matrix, instead of reinventing email. Implementing something like a mix net for email is actually not that difficult once PGP encryption can be assumed. Basically you'd just need each mail provider to offer a "switchboard" address in a .well-known location (or in the DNS), so that Alice can wrap her message to Bob in an outer layer message that's encrypted using Bob's provider's switchboard address's public key. This prevents Alice's provider from knowing who specifically she was sending the message to (it would only know which provider). Also, as Alice's message would contain her signature to authenticate it, her provider could use its own switchboard address as the sender, so that Bob's provider wouldn't know it was Alice specifically who sent it.
