Also a Canadian who was driving a 12 year old Mazda 6. Bought a Kia Niro EV in Sept 2020. Was maybe a bit premature but the charging network in Ontario at least is pretty decent. I've had a 30 amp charger installed at home, and I've managed to do Toronto->Ottawa->Toronto in a single day without much issue. The lack of government rebates is really annoying right now, but I don't think the demand is any less. There were only 3 Kia dealerships in Toronto dealing with EVs and they each brought in a single Niro EV per week. Made negotiating on price kind of hard (though not impossible). That said, I'm with the other people, when your current car is no longer worth it, that's when the right time to get a new car is, and if your car usage lines up well with EVs, it's a great time to transition.
