Every time a post like this comes up, I state this opinion:
I fully believe that Windows will _eventually_ be replaced with a desktop environment running on top of the linux kernel.
- calvin_ 5y agoNot because it'd be any good, but because it'd be cheaper for Microsoft.
- pjmlp 5y agoJust like Linux only started getting all the money from IBM back in 2000, because it was cheaper than Aix and a good way for IBM to disrupt Microsoft offerings in the enterprise.
- donkarma 5y agoyes and break every single kernel driver ever, nice one
- account42 5y agoKernel drivers can also put behind a compatibility shim if desired, see e.g. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NDISwrapper https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NDISwrapper But it's also not like Windows has ever had the same backwards compatibility guarantee for drivers as it has had for applications.
- wmf 5y agoNo, desktop Linux will be replaced by WSL running on top of Windows.
- gsich 5y agoOnly if it's from Microsoft.
