The US doesn't have the greatest history of taking the grunt of the burden when it comes to sanctions. Also as a European, is still remember as certain "fuck the Europeans" uttered by the neocons of your government when the Europeans warned that regime changing the Ukraine would maybe make the Russians feel threatened. Europe has to find its own stance and mechanisms to counter Putin. It's pretty clear that neither the European way (economic integration) nor the US way (forever treating like an enemy) worked.
