Ukrainians turned to encrypted messaging app Signal as Russians invaded
- quesomaster9000 5y agoThis is low-effort content. No mentions of Briar, Tox, Wickr, Wire, XMPP+OMEMO, irc+tor etc which don't require you to link your account with phone number? Or failure-resilient mesh networking over p2p links like Babeld, cjdns, B.A.T.M.A.N+OpenWRT etc. in the absence of reliable external internet connectivity. The balkans and eastern europe have a long and rich history of p2p internet & sneakernets, which sadly may have slowly been forgotten as everybody becomes locked into App-ified walled gardens of internet-dependent consumer trash.
- slezyr 5y agoNo, it's a PR company from Signal. I'm in Kharkiv right now. I know no one who uses Signal here. Everyone still uses telegram for all the communication and news. There is a lot of news about Signal, but it's simply not here. And yes, if I have to replace it, I'll go with something that does not require a phone number. Mobile networks might go down.
- quesomaster9000 5y agoThe irony is that Telegram is operated by a Russian company, it's linked to your phone number, and it's not end-to-end encrypted by default so everything is plain-text (even p2p messages are not encrypted, unless you enable that option).
- aaaaaaaaata 5y ago> company Not strictly true, but, technically true I guess.
