My Experience Working and Living in China
- nonrandomstring 5y agoI enjoyed this open and honest article by Frank Liu, but couldn't help seeing odd contradictions just below the surface. China is a nation of "naturally industrious people", yet "forced labour is everywhere". Western reports of a social control dystopia are overblown, but the "whole society revolves around two apps" - as a non-user of smartphones that's pretty much my definition of an absolute dystopia. Lived experience stories that dispel prejudices are so important. There's much Sinophobia around, and obviously the Rusophobia is high at present, so it's welcome to hear accounts that draw a distinction between good ordinary people and what their insane governments project to the world. The last paragraph on the things China and USA share was a great summing up. All of us, everywhere on Earth, face the same issues of broken 20th century government machinery, predatory corporations and personal laziness, apathy and lack of morals around how technology is used. Look forward to the next part.
