Tell HN: Feeding the Twitter mob that's trying to 'fight Putin' is a bad idea
Posts about SWIFT, nonsense about radiation at Chernobyl, are feeding a stateless mob behavior thing that's unlikely to help, and could easily exacerbate, the current crisis.
- themodelplumber 5y agoIt's tough to agree with that one. Such posts are known to influence politics (i.e. influencing/influencer effect, used by RUS govt operations as well) and SWIFT-related ideas and concerns about Chernobyl have already been raised by mainstream media anyway. Plus Putin has already shown he is willing to raise the stakes, which is de facto exacerbation.
- rossdavidh 5y agoWhile the idea of a Twitter mob "fighting Putin" is wishful thinking on their part, I also don't think it's likely to exacerbate anything. They're already dropping bombs. Events on the ground (e.g. how well and how long the Ukrainians, like the Finns in the Winter War against the USSR, can hold off the inevitable) will have orders of magnitude more impact than anything happening on Twitter. Decisions about SWIFT, etc. will be made based on the banks and intelligence agencies, not Twitter. I know it is dispiriting, but we have little to no influence here.
