UK Announces New Measures to Tackle Online Trolls
- jfengel 5y agoThe sucky part is that they have to do it by legislation. These are all things that the companies could do right now. And if they had shown any initiative, not only would it have given users something they want, but they could have avoided having the onus put clumsily on the by the government. The whole point of a social media site is for users to be able to connect with a friend group. Many want the experience to be limited to people they like, and exclude people who harass or bother them. That's not a matter of civil rights; it's just a feature that people want. It shouldn't have to be incumbent on every site to do it. Users should be voting with their feet. But there are network effects that create a natural monopoly, and users will stay in places that they don't like because the alternatives don't have their friends.
