Agreed. But since this is hacker news I'll share a funny development story about cursing.
One day, a long time ago, I got a ticket assigned to me. The client was upset because one of our emails we sent to their user contained a bad word in the randomly generated string.
Something like:
https://clientwebsite.com/come_tell_us_how_you_feel?uuid=d846befeca983-fUCK
They were upset that the randomly generated string actually contained a bad word. I found this unbelievable.
So my task was to find a huge list of every possible offensive word, and check that one of these words was not contained in the randomly generated uuid. If it did, generate a new uuid.
We had a good laugh about this, when going over that list of bad words.
- BrandoElFollito 5y agoI am personally upset by the words nitrogen and dissonance. I hope they were included in that list. My son does not like the word cheese because it triggers disgust (he really does hate cheese, which is sad for a French but anyway). So ch**e it is.
- InCityDreams 5y agoYou 'chose' only two stars for the missing word :-)
- BrandoElFollito 5y agoWell actually another one of my answer was completely fucked up by the HN formatting system where some stars were parsed as the start:end for italics. This also forces my tender fingers to use the word fuck in my answer to you instead of starring it. I could have used "disturbed" or "misparsed" instead when I think about thatbut anyway, fuck it is!
- Digit-Al 5y agoI have a similar story. I was tasked with randomly generating strings to be sent out to customers as activation codes. These were shortish codes generated in a SQL script. I dutifully created the required code and it was handed to the testers. I then went on Christmas break. During my break I received a message asking if they sent the SQL to me would I change it to remove the vowels. As this was a fairly easy change I agreed and did it for them. When I then got back to the office I asked why they had asked for the change. Turns out if you generate a million random string you will end up with most rude words coming out. They referred to it as the random fuck generator.
