USPS sticks with decision to buy inefficient 8.6 mpg trucks
- ddingus 5y agoSomeone needs to get to work on retrofits to improve those vehicles. An electric assist could double the MPG. Stop & Start uses lot of gas. A battery, short range capable, coupled with a charging system to top it off, could handle much of the route at much higher efficiency, even allowing for the gas engine to idle, for example.
- cnst 5y agoZero mention of any actual numbers for the decision — price, convenience, improvement compared to existing fleet. How's this outrage propaganda relevant to HN?
- nixass 5y ago8.6 mpg diesel engine cannot be any kind of meaningful improvement in urban areas. What's wrong with you?
- WaitWaitWha 5y agoYes, government wastes money. The current USPS trucks (Long Life Vehicles aka LLVs) do have some very unique requirements. The tests the trucks were put through sounds insane (e.g. hauling 1 ton while thousands of miles driven on paved, gravel, cobblestoned, and pot-holed roads) with the life span of 30 years. I do not believe we got enough details to throw USPS under the truck (yes, intended).
