Why are software development task estimations regularly off by a factor of 2-3?
- nikau 5y agoIf you give an honest estimate you won't get the green light for funding, so it's logical to underestimate the work but make sure you get past the point of no return/sunk cost fallacy so the project then gets extra funding to completion.
- ggm 5y agoThere is a metaquestion: why when we double our estimate are we STILL out by a factor of 2-3
- lioeters 5y agoI see it like a combination of the 90-90 rule with Zeno's paradox of the arrow. > The first 90 percent of the code accounts for the first 90 percent of the development time. The remaining 10 percent of the code accounts for the other 90 percent of the development time. This rule applies to that remaining 10% as well, so the work can theoretically continue forever trying to reach 100% done.
