There is actually a movement among homeschoolers to avoid cursive until much later in the learning process. We'll probably such a routine with our kids (and we'll probably have them typing at an early age, too). I had a very similar experience in school as well. Once I was through with cursive, I never wrote that way again (my signature is chicken scratch). I do, however, still pick up a pen and paper every day, if only to write in my journal.
