No English and maths GCSE, no university student loan for English Universities
- wdb 5y agoYou would think that English would be mandatory to do exams in when going to school in the UK. In some countries the mother tongue and English are both mandatory.
- mytailorisrich 5y agoMaths and English GCSEs (which is an exam pupils take at 16) are compulsory. What they mean is that if you failed English and maths GCSEs then you won't qualify for an university student loan.
- wdb 5y agoPersonally, I think you shouldn't be able to pass your exams when you fail one or more compulsory subjects
- mytailorisrich 5y agoThere is no overall pass for GCSEs and A-levels (the exams taken at the end of secondary school), it's per subject. That's why the article says "no English and math GCSE". That's also why people in the UK ask about the number of GCSEs and, especially, A-levels someone has, and then ask about which ones.
- wdb 5y agoThank you for clarifying. I didn't know that
- mytailorisrich 5y agoYeah there are many idiosyncrasies to the British system, which make articles such as this one not so easy to fully understand if you're not well acquainted with the system...
