Do you really want some communal, self-driving taxi with no personality taking you around? Who and how often are these going to be cleaned? Imagine you are on your way to a nice date and ride pulls up and there some gross McDonald’s bags on the floor, or a dirty diaper, or used condom. People are fucking gross and there is a large group of them that won’t or can’t have common decency to clean up after themselves. When “everyone” owns something then nobody owns it, and nobody takes proper care of it (sure there might be some company tasked with maintenance but they will only do just enough to keep it barely acceptable).
I mean you lose so much just by giving up vehicle ownership alone. What about the sense of pride you get when change the oil, wash, vacuum, and then put the windows down cruise around and turn up your favorite song? You aren’t ever getting any of that ever again.
No thanks, hard pass.
- orhmeh09 5y agoI have never owned a car and don’t plan to, because I have always lived in very dense cities and only intend to live in very dense cities. Life is unbearable to me elsewhere. The bus, subway, and taxis have worked fine my entire life. Do you know what you’re missing?
- hitpointdrew 5y agoYep, I do know what I missing. Loud noises, crowded streets, crappy air. I’ll take my rural life, with mountains, and woods, and right-to-farm property 100 times out of 100 over the high stress life in city any day.
- orhmeh09 5y agoNo thanks, I like walking places.
- hitpointdrew 5y agoPlenty of places to walk in the country, lots of hiking trails where you don't have to worry about getting hit by car, or having some jackjass bump into you. And if you do pass a person out in the country, you would actually say "Hi" and not just walk by as if they didn't exist.
- orhmeh09 5y agoWhat mean by that is walking to amenities — shops, restaurants, bars, galleries, theaters, sports centers and the like. Walking to work, too. You don’t need to worry about how you’re going to get home after drinking or whether you’ll find a ride share to take you all the way out to the snowed-in countryside where your house might be. Cities are where you change the world.
- LargoLasskhyfv 5y agoYou seem to mistake this with public mass transit as it is now in some parts, whereas the problems you describe don't even exist in other parts. Depends on culture, enforcement, whatever. Besides that, why not compare this with rental cars? You'd probably order this by app on you smart gadget. Car from pool of (just recently) free cars arrives. You check it, see/feel/smell/tell something icky, check NOPE! on the app, signal for next car. Meanwhile former renter gets negative points for leaving dirty car, points accumulate, raise dirty renters rates accordingly. Nudge, nudge, problem solved...
