I'd like to offer a hypothesis for what consciousness is: I think consciousness is modulating some other dimension that we don't have a good definition for. Electrical signals migrating around in the brain in certain complex patterns perhaps do that. If we figured out how to do it, we could perhaps invent telepathic communication. Schizophrenia, where people hear voices and think they have multiple people in their brain, is probably two of these complex patterns going at the same time that are out of sync with each other due to some form of brain damage.
