I always felt that KTLA had more of a character as a station than the other local stations (KCAL 9, KCOP 13, Metromedia 11 turned in to Fox 11 a long time ago). No doubt this is partly due to the continuity they've maintained with the Rose Parade coverage. The other stations were just outlets for TV shows. KTLA felt more local.
I didn't watch a lot of any of these, honestly, so it's just a gut feeling of them.
Interesting retrospective in the article.

- quartesixte 5y agoGrowing up, KTLA5 definitely always was the less polished cousin of ABC7, KCAL9, and NBC4. Much more “local” in feeling than the other three mainstream channels. It also had the primetime lineup that was the, quirkiest and the shows on The CW definitely had a certain charm to them compared to, say, ABC’s or CBS’s dramas.

As a SoCal native I still remember watching Hal Fishman in the early 90s as a child, and vaguely watching him discuss the fall of the Soviet Union and the fall of the Berlin wall, OJ chase and trial and then more vividly watching car chases that interrupted my after school cartoons. Apparently he had the record for longest career Anchor in TV history up until recently [0]. I'd eventually leave for Fox 11 and as I kind of always wanted to have Rick Garcia's job. 0: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hal_Fishman https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hal_Fishman
