- trainsarebetter 5y agoPutting them in an echo chamber and potentially reducing exposure to a broader set of ideas and morals? I hope this isn’t the case.
- krapp 5y agoAt some point you have to realize sunlight isn't killing the infection and focus on limiting the spread.
- trainsarebetter 5y agoOkay, but grouping them together doesn’t help in that context
- CRConrad 5y agoMakes it easier to nuke it from orbit.
- robbedpeter 5y agoMaybe mastodon is robust enough to withstand the incompetence and malicious horde. At the very least, this'll be a great trial by fire for Mastodon security.
- 2Gkashmiri 5y agoWhat happened to the alleged mastodon license violation ? Anyways, if this still based on mastodon code, maybe that will help mastodon codebase to be stress tested. Fediverse rules
- more_corn 5y agoThey responded within 30 days and released source code as the license required.
- 2Gkashmiri 5y agoThat is good. Isn't it ?
- bdcravens 5y agoComplying with an OSS license is good, yes.
- arunharidas 5y agoIf you deplatform people from the mainstream, there will sure be an uprising like this.
- skc 5y agoWhich is fine frankly. Now everyone can have their own platforms with their own rules. I really don't see an issue with it
- Tanjreeve 5y agoI'd hardly call some oligarchs starting a website an "uprising". The technology is pretty cool though I'm hoping more people are making smaller communities rather than everyone relying on massive super platforms with opaque governance
- aaaaaaaaata 5y agoYou may genuinely be intrigued by the story of the guy who maintains Voat. Seemed to me at last review like they don't exactly agree with the site's users as a group, but finds it very important that the free discourse is protected.
- vhgyu75e6u 5y agoSo it is a Twitter clone pretty much based on the screenshot, I'll give it around 1 to 2 years to implode due to bad guidelines, becoming an echo chamber of conspiracy theories and losing most of its users. It will be bleeding money from the start and will try to survive with ads (which not even Twitter is able to) and donations from the hardcore supporters.
- robbedpeter 5y agoIt's a mastodon deployment. It's federated and because it's Trump, there's crazy rich people throwing money at him (rich people who are crazy, not crazy rich like Musk or Bezos.) Getting a huge user base on federated social media is great. It won't be long before journalists figure it out and migrate to some left of center federated collective. More, smaller, thematic communities it's good. It took an afternoon for me to spin up and deploy my own mastodon site to be my nouveau social digital home. The more people within the fediverse and the more communities that move away from big tech, the better. They just have to survive the 4chan/antifa trash flood coming their way. Who knows, maybe some code and tooling will come about from whoever maga pays to develop their systems.
- tinus_hn 5y agoThis apps users would probably say the mainstream platforms are an echo chamber for the opposite points of view.
- Tanjreeve 5y agoIt would be pretty dumb seeing as twitter (to single out one) has huge numbers of fascists to communists on it still to this day. Personally I think the problem of "echo chambers" is a minor one compared to the problem of massive unitary platforms where western governments offload political debates on the limits of free speech and what constitutes disinformation to a bunch of tech execs.
- tinus_hn 5y agoEven though there might be different opinions that’s of no help when the platform tries to keep you inside a bubble that only contains opinions that agree with you.
- zthrowaway 5y agoI’m sure there will be plenty of hackivists attacking this platform, and pressures on hosting companies to kill parts of their infrastructure.
