I just saw this in the article: "MOG ... will also require new users to log in with Facebook, said David Hyman, the company’s chief executive."
Does that mean no one will be able to sign up for MOG (another music service) without providing a Facebook account either? Am I interpreting that correctly? I looked for a sign-up button on MOG but didn't immediately see any way to sign up without a Facebook account.
- ltamake 15y agoIt's a really stupid move for both services, Spotify and MOG. Some users don't have Facebook accounts for whatever reason (suspension, dislike of Facebook, no need for it, etc.), and this prevents them from becoming potential customers of the music services.
- natrius 15y agoYou have anecdotes. They have data. It's bizarre to see how many people are willing to call this decision a mistake while my Facebook Ticker is full of people playing songs on Spotify. The new signups from the increased visibility probably dwarf the number of people who end their subscriptions in protest. It's quite possible that this "stupid move" is also a wildly profitable move.

- jarin 15y agoOn the other hand, a ton of people I know have signed up for Spotify and Rdio simply because they saw them in their feeds. Hell, I only heard about Earbits that way and I love it. Maybe that was the cost to get on the Music tab.
- ktsmith 15y agoIf you click "Get Mog" on the top menu and then pick one of the service levels you are still able to create a MOG account. Wonder how long that will last.
- CWuestefeld 15y agoI just did this. After registering, they sent me a confirmation "click this link to prove it's your real email address" message. After completing that, they sent me a (plaintext) confirmation email, containing my username and password. Email around my password is bad enough. But the fact that the final confirmation message, containing my password, was several minutes removed from my initial registration, probably[1] demonstrates that they're not using one-way hashes for password storage. If this is correct, then it may just be that Facebooks' stewardship of my data is better than MOG's. [1] IIRC, the "prove it's my email" linked page asked me to log in. If so, then they might have intercepted that login request, and sent that back via email. That's possible, but I'd be surprised.
- runevault 15y agoI found this both frustrating and ironic as someone recommended MOG to me when I told him I was going to stop using Spotify over their new policy, even though I have an old account.
- nextparadigms 15y agoYes, Mog actually had that a few days before f8 when they announced they are offering free streaming. The only way to sign-up was with Facebook, which is why I didn't sign-up.
