Truth Social Releases on the Apple App Store

- watersb 5y agoThis is the Twitter clone that former President Trump has sponsored, in order to keep on tooting after he was banned from other social media services. Not sure what to make of it; I wonder how many fake accounts get set up.
- Pooge 5y agoAlso worth noting that it's a fork of Mastodon and they didn't comply with the license requirement initially [1]. Boggles my mind that they didn't just make a new instance to be part of the federation, instead of... reinventing the wheel. - throwaway4good 5y agoHow well would Mastodon scale? If this is as succesful as Trump was on Twitter, it will draw tens of millions of users in a short time. Probably more than there ever has been on Mastodon.
- jazzyjackson 5y agoWell signup is currently rate limited so its not like they can handle 10 million users on day one neither. It's still mastodon code, and it's pretty hypocritical/weird that they have a closed fork where they kick you off if you're deemed untruthful. They could have added capacity to the existing network and actually delivered on the anarchy/free speech angle.
- throwaway4good 5y agoBasing it on Mastodon sounds like a lot of trouble for a high-volume, high-attention, deeply controversial project like this.
- jazzyjackson 5y agohow do you mean? it seems like the least amount of trouble if the alternative is writing your own platform from scratch.
- throwaway4good 5y agoYou know that it needs to scale to a non-trivial number of users from scratch. So I would design for that (ie. not use a relational database like postgresql). And you know that it is going to be controversial. So any sort of legal open source mumbojombo is going to be an issue and will be used against the project. And the federation features; that is just going to be an attack vector for spammers or hackers. Any way curious to see what it becomes, and hear how it is actually implemented, if that ever gets out.
- jazzyjackson 5y agoSo this is the new social platform that fact checks every post then /s …well I typed that as a joke but I’m reading their ToS now and find this: > If you provide any information that is untrue, inaccurate, not current, or incomplete, we have the right to suspend or terminate your account and refuse any and all current or future use of the Service (or any portion thereof). https://help.truthsocial.com/legal/terms-of-service/ https://help.truthsocial.com/legal/terms-of-service/ (Note to truth staff, links to Privacy Policy and ToS under the signup form both 404, had to google to find them)
- btgeekboy 5y agoOnly 12MB? I'm guessing it's basically just a webview?
- dusted 5y agohow the fck does a webview gobble up a whole 12 mib?
- _yoqn 5y agoWhy did this post get flagged? It's a social network and the comments are mostly about the code and implementation. The title doesn't mention any political entity or person... ?
