I recently saw an ad on Facebook or Twitter for Amazon Alexa that said "what if Alexa could read minds?" and went on to dramatize the hypothetical. I was absolutely gobsmacked as they say, it took me several minutes to come to terms with the idea that this was a genuine ad, not a parody, supposed to promote feelings of goodwill towards an always-listening assistant. Perhaps their next ad will say "what if Alexa was linked directly to counterterrorism authorities" and dramatize something like the end of 1984...and then say "good thing it isn't yet, because the details need a bit of work".
