The tiny (non-dedicated) instance types on AWS probably multiplex hundreds of guests on a single host.
- WalterBright 5y agoWhy not hundreds on a single low power host?
- yjftsjthsd-h 5y agoBecause lower power machines can't run as many guests? I'm nothing like an expert in data center power consumption and relative efficiencies, but the last I had heard was that it was generally more efficient to cram a lot of users on high-end hardware rather than trying to run everybody on enough low end hardware to match the same overall throughput.
- WalterBright 5y agoBut this is not a scheme to match overall throughput. It's supposed to be slower.
- bonzini 5y agoThe way you make it slower is by packing more guests on the same number of hosts. And the way you lower power consumption is by having fewer hosts.
- bonzini 5y agoBecause it would be fewer hundreds, and therefore you would need more and it might even be more power overall.
