Show HN: OpenCamera hack for Pixel 6 Pro
- quesomaster9000 5y agoStrangely the official Google Camera app also started crashing on an original Pixel phone soon after the Pixel 6 & Android 12 related app updates were launched (despite being stuck on an older version of android as it's beyond its lifetime expectancy / planned obsolescence). Various other apps that use the camera aren't effected
- renewiltord 5y agoIt was shit like this that blew my mind on the Android phones. You could get a top of the line official Google phone and you try to pull up the camera to catch a moment and instead you get a black screen for 5 s and the app crashes. My iPhone 13 on the other hand: instant camera. I’ve got a whole bunch of these useless Android phones lying in a corner.
- aaaaaaaaata 5y ago2-3 seconds on GrapheneOS, stock camera.
- aaaaaaaaata 5y agoSell me them if you don't want to WebUSB install Graphene on them.
- renewiltord 5y agoI would, but I’d rather churn them for the data safety. So they get smashed. Sorry mate.
- smileybarry 5y agoMe and my dad had Pixel 2s, and we both experienced the "unable to open camera" bug[1] -- except his remained for months. He eventually had to have his entire camera module replaced because his phone was one of the unfortunate bunch bricked by a silent camera firmware update. (The original cause of that bug, "fixed" by later OS updates that re-patch the camera firmware) Also, yes, I experienced those occasional camera hang+crashes on my Pixel 2 as well. (before and after the big camera bug) I put up with it but I agree it's insane. 1: https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/09/25/pixel-2-camera-curse-continues-and-its-spreading-to-newer-pixels/ https://www.androidpolice.com/2020/09/25/pixel-2-camera-curs...
- justsomehnguy 5y agoWhich is amusing by itself, because iPhone didn't had fast camera initialization until HTC HD7 on Windows Phone showed how fast it could be.
