The reality about the winter is that cycling in the winter is fucking cold. The forward movement exaggerates the wind chill. You have your hands on the handlebars and are still trying to wipe the snot off your face. You can't insulate your body correctly so the heat from biking is shed while the rest of your body doesn't freeze. You have to wear gloves to insulate your hands and have to keep your torso in this very narrow band of comfortable temperatures. It's absolutely miserable compared to driving just like the summer is.
It's nothing like walking which is much more natural and easy to adjust for. It's certainly unpleasant but not quite as much as biking.
Also "we need to get past the mental block we have" is a bit weird. No we don't. Maybe that "mental block" is there for a reason.
