Torque vs Horsepower. 1000 RPM vs 6000 RPM. The small engines work fine in a (the?) large number of cases. Torque is still won in the low end. For an example, Ram's 392 CID gas vs 392 CID diesel. That example is not 100% accurate because of a turbo and fuel characteristics, but it's illustrative.
