IKEA’s Race for the Last of Europe’s Old-Growth Forest
- hulitu 5y agoGot to love those commenters. Until now cutting forests was ok because "renewable". Now IKEA is to blame for the last one. They shall face it: it is too late. What the man accomplished in the last century will take centuries to recover, if at all.
- fy20 5y agoIt sounds like the issue is corruption allowing the forests to be clear cut. I live in another European country where IKEA owns the majority of forests and we do not have this issue. Forests are managed sustainably, and if it's not IKEA there will be someone else who buys it. Plus the amount of forested land here has actually gone up since the fall of the Soviet Union. Admittedly IKEA could do more to inspect where the wood comes from and cut off suppliers who are not working sustainably, but that is not going to be an easy task to monitor every single forest. And they still need to trust the people doing the monitoring.
