Show HN: What The Fake: Guess which headline is real?
- cerivitos 5y agoHi all, I created a little web game while learning Angular. The objective is to guess the real headline over 5 rounds. Players can also challenge their friends by sharing a unique link of the same headlines. Have fun and post your scores :)
- cybarDOTlive 5y agoI didn't enjoy the game because it was basically just guess work. A lot of the seemingly bizarre headlines are perfectly capable of being real in this clownworld, nevertheless, great presentation!
- cerivitos 5y agoThanks for trying. Yup some headlines are stranger than fiction.
- greatergoodguy 5y agoI was surprised I couldn't see the results after each question. Getting that instant gratification would make me want to continue playing.
- cerivitos 5y agoYeah I went with the design choice to show the results at the end. In the app version (link on the main page) it shows the result after each selection because the game ends when you make a wrong choice.
- josephcsible 5y agoSome of The Onion's articles have true headlines with silly bodies, like https://www.theonion.com/frontier-spirit-airlines-merge-to-create-5th-largest-a-1848503350 https://www.theonion.com/frontier-spirit-airlines-merge-to-c... and https://www.theonion.com/new-york-times-buys-online-game-wordle-1848470776 https://www.theonion.com/new-york-times-buys-online-game-wor... It's kind of unfair when we get those headlines in the game.
- cerivitos 5y agoThanks for trying. You have a good point, those were true headlines but with satire text. Got to find a way to filter those out... Unfortunately they don't seem to belong to a fixed section which I can parse.
- jessikat 5y agoAh yeah, I got bit by that too! Haha
- josephcsible 5y agoAll of the ones I've seen have been under "American Voices". Can you filter on that?
- cerivitos 5y agoGood suggestion will take a look. On first glance it doesn't appear in the url which is what I'm getting from the Reddit api. Will have to think of some other way.
- d--b 5y agoThis was fun. There were true facts like "koalas listed as endangered" and "New York Times buys online game Wordle", which were not the real headlines. The ones I got wrong were super weird.
- cerivitos 5y agoThanks for the support. Yup someone else pointed that out too. It's because The Onion where I get 'fake' headlines from have some articles where the headline is true but the text is satire. Need to find a way to categorize those properly.
