What if these people were outting gay people? How about sex workers? Would that be acceptable behavior? I think not. Illegally obtaining the information, followed by disclosing it to the public isn't cool. How about if they were blackmailing them to keep their individual names from disclosure? Where is the line? What if the people outted found the hackers or people publishing their information and performed "frontier justice " upon them? See where this goes? This isn't the hallmark of a civilized society.
- rbanffy 5y agoI'm just suggesting this wouldn't be much of a problem (apart from the illegally obtaining the info part) if the donors didn't want their names to be secret. Now, with the trucker's org being labeled a national security threat, the whole thing becomes a lot more complicated. We agree that the consequences from speaking freely are not always nice but, sometimes, when you want to make a political point, you expose yourself. For the past couple years, I've been harassed by supporters of Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, who I consider an imbecile and a fascist who endangers the young democracy of the country I grew up. Happily, I live in a place with a functional police and none of the threats have resulted in any concrete action, but, still, it's annoying, specially since I still have family in Brazil.
