You're right since this not only killed many thousands but demonstrated that the US was completely capable in destroying any Japanese city at their whim. Sure rearming and maintaining aircraft can take days, but at this point the Japanese military played no part in defending their cities, and it was just all up to US decision making whether to continue to quick destruction of Japanese municipalities.
I think the saga of the Japanese leadership considering surrender is fascinating. Obviously everything will be destroyed pretty soon without capitulation, but it's clear that the leadership had a difficult time admitting that their decades of confidence in the Japanese military's destiny were wrong.
