Inhaled Vaccine Delivers Broad Protection Against SARS-CoV-2
- blakesterz 5y agoMIT looks like they're trying inhaled vaccines for cancer: https://news.mit.edu/2021/vaccination-inhalation-0319 https://news.mit.edu/2021/vaccination-inhalation-0319 And several others are looking at CoV too: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33749491/ https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33749491/ I guess nasal vaccines have been around for a while but the inhaled thing is still pretty new(ish) and from what I could read on some scattered short mentions in other reading, it's not really very widely used? I may be wrong on that, and can't find a great citation.
- derbOac 5y agoAn open source inhaled vaccine was one of the first vaccines to be publicly promoted. I've always wondered how it would fare in RCTs, as it would be interesting if an open, unregulated vaccine design proposed relatively early in the pandemic became a model for coronavirus vaccines going forward.
- Confiks 5y agoPublicly promoted, DIY-vaccine indeed: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23983756 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23983756

- schmorptron 5y agoI hear it has some pretty sick side effects though
- belltaco 5y agoA pretty terrible one if so, since it's killing thousands just in US every day.
- petsounds 5y agoThere are ~10k people dying of COVID every day since Omicron was detected, sounds like we could use a better one
- swader999 5y agoOf or with?
- simiones 5y agoSame thing. You die "of" every disease you have at the moment of death, or very near. Especially for diseases which impact your circulatory system such as Covid.

- vmception 5y agoI think it is hyperbole not a real assertion, it is a weakened version of the virus which is the original basis of the concept of vaccines, pre-mRNA
- kwantam 5y agoIt's a tempting sound bite, but it's wrong. First, a real vaccine is designed to be much safer than the disease it protects against (compare extremely rare incidence of vaccine side effects with extremely common incidence of hospitalization for infection). What would be the point otherwise? Second, in the case of COVID variants prior to Omicron, infection is 5x less effective than vaccination at protecting against future infection: https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2021/s1029-Vaccination-Offers-Higher-Protection.html https://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2021/s1029-Vaccination-Of...
- vmception 5y agoI get it, because the similarity is that it is a weakened version of the virus, just like how our non-mRNA vaccines have been structured
- onion2k 5y agoThis is what they put in chemtrails. ;)
- sschueller 5y agoJust mix it into the tear gas canisters at the protests. Problem solved, either the anti vaxxers stay home or get vaxxed.
- mikem170 5y ago> Just mix it into the tear gas canisters at the protests. Problem solved, either the anti vaxxers stay home or get vaxxed. I got a chuckle out of your comment, because it's kind of funny/clever. But I hope you were not serious. Many people believe it is wrong for one group of people to impose their will on others, on principle. I know that's not the prevailing attitude in our culture, and this causes many ginormous problems for our ginormous governments. We are all created equal. It's better to talk with people who think differently rather than tear gas them.
- xiphias2 5y agoWhat is the main reason that inhaled vaccines are not in use today for flu for example? Is there some new technological breakthrough for delivery that was needed?
- kwantam 5y agoThey are! Inhaled flu vaccines are generally live attenuated virus, which isn't recommended for everyone but is perfectly effective for a large segment of the population: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/nasalspray.htm https://www.cdc.gov/flu/prevent/nasalspray.htm
- consumer451 5y agoFrom a lay person's point of view, I am trying to imagine if there would be significant extra mass required to distribute a billion inhalable vs injectable vaccines. It seems like there would be additional mass and volume. Could that be one reason?
- ageitgey 5y agoNasal flu vaccines are widely used. For example in the UK, all children in school are offered a nasal flu vaccine every year [1]. [1] https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/child-flu-vaccine/ https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/child-flu-vaccine...
- sleepingadmin 5y agoDoes it prevent infection? If not, it's not a vaccine.
- prohobo 5y agoThis shouldn't be downvoted, it's true. There's nothing wrong with creating good drugs and therapies, and this looks cool, but if it doesn't stop transmission it's literally not a vaccine. EDIT: I'm wrong. I would have been right for the wrong reasons in 2018, but now vaccines are "any substance that generates antibodies that produce immunity to disease".
- sleepingadmin 5y ago>This shouldn't be downvoted, it's true. I knew I would be when I posted. I accept the consequences of my post. >There's nothing wrong with creating good drugs and therapies, and this looks cool, but if it doesn't stop transmission it's literally not a vaccine. I have 2 shots, I believe in these shots, but misrepresenting them as something they are not has been dangerous. No doubt it casts shadow upon their value.
- prohobo 5y agoAfter reading all the definitions and articles about the meaning of vaccine and immunity, I think it's legit to call them vaccines. The problem has been that the Covid vaccines are definitely not what they were advertised as in terms of efficacy (namely: stopping transmission and ending the pandemic).
- sleepingadmin 5y ago>After reading all the definitions and articles about the meaning of vaccine and immunity, I think it's legit to call them vaccines. This is a fair point but going forward perhaps we need a new term or at least requirement to differentiate the clear 2 different categories. >The problem has been that the Covid vaccines are definitely not what they were advertised as in terms of efficacy (namely: stopping transmission and ending the pandemic). Oh absolutely. You can find countless examples of mainstream media saying that the covid shot would prevent infection and then you never have to worry about it again and we can then reopen. So what do you think we should do to prevent this borderline fraud?
