I agree, relying on subscriptions privately vs at work is a completely different story.
At work, I'll suggest a subscription as soon as it provides value.
Privately, I'm extremely picky and always try to get the best bang for the buck, especially for recurring subscription costs. I happily pay for:
- Spotify Duo: According to my yearly review, I'm in the top 3% listeners in my country. I basically listen to music all day when coding, exercising, doing chores,...
- Gym membership: 15€/month and I use it a lot. Friends of mine pay 60-100€ and use it less.
- Hosting: 1€ per year for my domain and 1€ per month for my email. I'm still on the free tier for NextCloud storage.
- Phone/Internet: I chose the cheapest plans I could find (14€ for Broadband, 5€ for unlimited calls + 1 GB data)/ month
I rarely pay for:
- Video Subscription like Netflix/Amazon Prime. If there's anything I really want to watch, I'll get a trial or subscribe for a month and then cancel. There is a lot great free (or: paid by my public-service broadcasting fees) stuff to watch on the web.
- Private SaaS stuff: Some tools like Obsidian sound intruiging, but so far I'm getting by well enough and prefer using OSS tools where I'd only send a donation once in a while instead of paying a recurrent fee.
