One thing I notice about this is the character of the counter-protestors rhetoric:
The signs and narrative I see are all about hating a group and to some extent a viewpoint - they don't like the truckers and they don't like the idea that people reject government imposition during covid.
This is very different than the freedom convoy members themselves, who are protesting against the government, not their fellow man, and whose anger is directed to the government.
Agree or disagree with the protestors in ottawa, it's hate that's driving this counterprotest and it's really scary
- ggm 5y agoA point made in the article I think that bears repeating: Many of the truckers were surprised people didn't support them, they genuinely believe they have overwhelming support amongst the majority. Perhaps now, they realise what a minority-bubble is?
- version_five 5y agoYes I agree it's good to get a different viewpoint. I hope the same applies to the people who think of these truckers and what they represent as sub-human (like our PM has basically expressed). Protesting the government is appropriate in my view, clashing with your fellow man is not, and this applies to both sides, I would definitely not want to see violence between the different citizen groups
- msie 5y agoC'mon the hate is understandable. In the past anti-vaxxers have harassed everyone from nurses to restaurant workers. People who have been vaccinated and have followed the mandates have had enough of the anti-vaxxers which is what the convoy represents. And the convoy has been terribly inconveniencing everyone beyond what a normal protest is like. 18 days blockage at one border crossing? Unbelievable.
