Remember the .org fiasco [1]? Your domain is not your domain. Web3 aims to fix that. Actually there is like a half-dozen competing projects at the moment (ENS, Unstoppable Domains and Handshake for example). Yes you did build your own server and you put your data on it. Almost nobody can stomach that UX. Almost everybody will put their data on server that will make money off of that data. Web3's goal is to make it so its easy to share your data in a way where profits go to you. We aren't there yet, but for example mirror.xyz is working hard on making decentralized blogging easier.
