Having a server has saved me a tremendous amount of money. Here are a few things I self host that would normally cost money
-Terabytes of storage
-Password manager
-Streaming service (jellyfin)
-Home automation (if I remember correctly some home automation services have a fee)
-Music streaming
-Backups
-Email
-Website saver (wallabag)
Not to mention how much I've learned while managing the thing. I truly think everyone who can should have a server these days. We have zero subscriptions for any internet service and I wouldn't have it any other way
- not_math 5y agoIt's easy to save money, just pirate it ! You're right about it saving money, but maintaining a server, making sure there are backups and all the work and money you need to put into it can easily outweigh the savings for many. Just like building your own furniture, a lot of the time it costs more than just buying a table at Ikea. But if you're having fun, it is well worth it.
- mindslight 5y agoThis will end your smugness - https://lowendbox.com/ https://lowendbox.com/ But yes I agree, the top post is like reading a transmission from a distant galaxy. I pay for a few cloud machines, consumer VPN, Internet uplink, and electricity. Outsourcing services you rely upon creates all the wrong incentives. Hardware costs money, especially when you get obsessive about it (. o O 2TB SSDs are getting cheap, maybe I'll add some to my backups). But the cost is fully accrued at time of purchase and the ongoing relationship is straightforward. There's no slow creep up in monthly spend, price increases, or trying to cut back ongoing services that you can't imagine living without (would you rather watch TV xor listen to music next month? lol) And ultimately it's not even about money. Every time I read some HN outrage thread about some centralized service acting against their users, I wonder why people put up with it. Digital privacy/autonomy FTFW.
