GNU Smalltalk: The Smalltalk for those who can type
- mhartl 18y agoI don't understand the tagline. I'd guess it's somehow a dig at Squeak, but I don't get it.
- ivey 18y agoFrom the FAQ: What is "The Smalltalk for those who can type" supposed to mean? It is a pun on the usage of a text editor (and thus using the keyboard more, and the mouse less) to write programs for GNU Smalltalk, which sets it different from other Smalltalk.
- mhartl 18y agoThanks. Serves me right for not reading the FAQ.
- pfedor 18y agoOne of the unique things about Smalltalk is that the GUI for defining, accessing and modifying classes is an integral part of the language. You write code to implement your methods, but the structure of your application is defined more or less with pointing and clicking (and you can use the same UI for inspecting the implementation of the language itself, or at least parts of it). As far as I understand GNU Smalltalk replaced this with some ad hoc syntax for defining classes by editing text files.
- schtog 18y agoWow didn't know this existed. I never really got along with Squeak but I was intrigued with the language. I'll give this a try.
