I'm starting to discover an interesting contrast with SCADA industrial protocols. In principle, being "liberal in what you accept" when you're writing a controller for an industrial process, well, it's a non starter. But, the protocols themselves are such monstrosities written by committee, that in fact most implementations are very deliberately only partial implementation of the spec, with most of the standard rejected right off the bat.
