You know what would actually help this situation for Britain? Nordsteam2.
It would lessen the energy crunch happening in Western Europe right now.
Unfortunately the US is dead set against Nordstream2 getting the proper German regulatory approvals to go live.
- ggm 5y agoYes, but it's only one choice of many. Demand management is less painful than people think. They just don't like being told to turn stuff off, few people actually die from it, compared to price based methods. (I lived through the 1970s miners strike, I know what ubiquitous rolling power cuts in winter are like) And it has political downsides. Frankly, buying LNG in bulk carriers might be cheaper than allowing yourself to be wedged by N2.
- hollerith 5y agoPlease clarify: Are ubiquitous rolling power cuts in winter one of the measures that are less painful than people think?
- ggm 5y agoThey're more painful than "turn off those lights and turn down the heater" but the point is, less people die than you'd think. If you want to force the issue, there's more ways out than just buying Nordstream 2. It was demand management at scale. Modern demand management is ringing up a shopping centre and offering them a discount to pull back on their AirCon and heating. Or, classic UK controlled-suppply for domestic hot water which is routinely used to manage load and shed load. Economists modelled how giving people free jerseys and gloves would work compared to insulation. You need to understand these things. The problem isn't that they don't work: They actually work pretty well. The problem is that people hate drafts, and wearing a sloppy joe inside the house doesn't stop your window causing drafts. Tell me, do you always ask rhetorical questions? Does it work? Do you always get the answer you expect? What number am I thinking of? Oh wait.. thats wordle...

- consumer451 5y agoIt is not only the US which is against Nordstream2. Any population which is sensitive to Kremlin aggression is against filling their coffers and giving the Kremlin control of their own economies. There are many countries with such populations.
