Indeed, in the mid 2000s I worked on building tool flows in a multi-vendor environment with EDIF as the common netlist format. It worked fairly OK, with some tweaking. I synthesized complex modules to EDIF/NGC using Synopsys Design Compiler, Xilinx XST and Mentor Precision and stitched them together via NGDbuild targeting Virtex 4 FPGAs.
