There's a natural cause and effect relationship between meaningless internet points as a status symbol and banthirsty behavior. HN is one of the few places where people can have points without the resulting anti-social behavior. I believe the secret sauce is on HN you can't know at a glance I have 13865 karma right now.
- hn_go_brrrrr 5y agoHow do you figure? Your profile clearly shows your karma (13867 at time of writing).
- VLM 5y agoThat took more effort than most people will put in. Most HN participants will judge your post based on the content of your post, rather than taking the time to click thru to examine your position in the social hierarchy groupthink relative to mine or theirs, yours is merely 234 at this time, which is about one 59th of my exalted rank in the hierarchy. Given our power disparity I believe you're supposed to address me as Honored Sir, BTW. (just kidding... I think?) As for Reddit its funny how classist it inherently is, given its political leanings of most of its few remaining unbanned participants.
- 535188B17C93743 5y agoThe amount of Reddit comments with "well you post history" blah blah on it and then they'll mention posts from YEARS ago. Not sure I agree.
- sudosysgen 5y agoThat's most likely from the RES tagging feature. They may have had you tagged beforehand, or they may have downloaded one of the dozens of taglists floating around, after which they can simply click the tag and arrive at one of your most egregious posts.
- VLM 5y agoThat does occasionally happen, but there must be thousands of people clicking the up or down arrows for every person willing to do chilling effect e-stalking e-blackmail type stuff to intimidate people. I'm just saying public participation in conversation moderating is much like public participation in voting where its a pretty extreme power law where most people lurk or barely themselves to click a button, but a very small minority will put in huge efforts for their cause.
- samstave 5y agoThere are some tools which will log-in and scramble every comment to raNDOM WORDS - then delete the comment...
- sudosysgen 5y agoIf you don't want to get banned from Reddit, your best bet is to be a libertarian or a centrist liberal. Ever since their IPO was approaching Reddit admins have been banning or threatening leftist subreddits too.
- ravenstine 5y agoDo people commonly pay attention to other people's karma on HN? I don't think I have even once. Although it's useful in seeing how people have responded to one's posts or comments, it's a pretty worthless statistic. I'm not really sure why we even have karma.
- sudosysgen 5y agoOnly a minority to accuse them of being a shill, which is the same on Reddit.
- RamenJunkie_ 5y agoI barely pay attention to usernames, much less Karma, on HN or Reddit.
- sudosysgen 5y agoAnyone can click anyone else's profile and see how much karma they have.
- zozbot234 5y agoWhat I've heard is that there's a lot of malicious reporting going on these days. The global moderators don't necessarily bother to check if a comment or submission has been flagged/reported in good faith, so lots of unwarranted bans can be the result.
